Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can occur following the experience or witnessing of life threatening events such as violent personal assaults (i.e. rape, sexual abuse, physical assault), severe accidents, natural disasters, or military combat – all these experiences fall outside the normal range of human experience; thus, an individual typically does not have sufficient coping skills to deal with them.

People who suffer from PTSD often relive the experience though nightmares and flashbacks, have difficultly sleeping and feel detached or estranged.

These symptoms can be severe enough and last long enough to significantly impair the person's daily life.
